Amplid è orgogliosa di annunciare che McRae William è entrato a far parte della famiglia Amplid. Lo skier 19enne è uno dei rider americani più in vista del momento, la scorsa stagione ha vinto il "Canyon’s Open Slopestyle” ed il “Massive Style & Air” a Breckenridge e non aspetta altro che arrivi il momento di vincere ancora. Andiamo a conoscerlo meglio.

Presumo che avrai già sentito questa domanda: perchè il tuo nome è "MCRae" ed il tuo cognome è "Williams"? Non dovrebbe essere il contrario?

Bene, mia nonna è un artista ed ha ricevuto il nome da un famoso pittore che ha conosciuto tempo fa. McRae è il mio "middle name", nome di mezzo, ma nessuno mi conosce con il mio primo nome. Così ho preferito mantenere McRae.

Un'altra tipica domanda: come hai iniziato a sciare?
E' difficile ricordarlo esattamente; avevo solamente 3 anni. In teoria, mia mamma mi ha fatto inizare. Ho vissuto per tutta la vita a Park City ed ho iniziato a sciare a Deer Valley. Ricordo di una piccola baita nel fitto dei boschi, con un orso imbalsamato all'interno. Bei tempi!

Qual è stato il tuo primo sci?

Degli sci old school di legno, gli attacchi avevano degli strap di pelle. Penso di averli ancora da qualche parte.

Quando hai iniziato a sciare, potevi immaginare che lo sci sarebbe diventato una cosa così importnate per te?
In nessun modo! Ho sempre saputo che comunque avrei sciato per tutto il resto della mia vita perchè amo veramente tanto lo sci, ma non avevo idea che sarebbe andata così. Adesso sciare E' la mia vita. E' un sogno divenuto realtà!

Dove ti posizioni nella scena freeski e dove vorresti essere fra 5 anni?

Fra 5 anni spero di andare a filmare in backcountry il più possibile e viaggiare per il mondo cercando i posti più meravigliosi. Spero di riuscire a fare qualche contest ma filmare è quello che mi interessa di più adesso.

Sei appena entrato a far parte del team Amplid Research Cartel. Come sei entrato in contatto con loro?

In realtà, avevo un invito per la West Coast Session, ed è qui che ho incontrato Brandon Pastucka. Quest'estate Pastucka mi ha semplicemente chiesto se ero interessato ad entrare in Amplid e mi ha invitato a Mt. Hood per provare i materiali. Sono stato impressionato dagli sci e da tutto quello che Amplid mi ha offerto così ho firmato il contratto solo poche settimane dopo.

Wallish ed Amplid hanno preso strade diverse, McRae è appena entrato. Questo genera in te qualche tipo di pressione?

Certamente. So bene che non sarò in grado di alzare più di tanto quello che Tom ha fatto per il nostro sport ma cercherò di mettere tutto me stesso per fare tutto il meglio che mi è possibile. Cercherò di essere a più competizioni possibili e cercherò di prendere tutte le possibilità di filmare che avrò. Mi sono allenato tutta estate e spero di riuscire a dimostrare qualcosa.

Cosa farai nella prossima stagione? Contest? Shooting?

Inizierò la stagione in Korea per un big air show. Questo farà parte delle cerimonie d'apertura della Seoul Snow Jam che vedrà lo svolgersi anche della Snowboard World Cup Big Air. Dopo questo farò il Dew Tour a Breckenridge, Colorado. Andrò agli Aspen Open, Euro Open, Us Open, Winter Park Open ed altri contest ancora. Spero di riuscire a filmare verso fine stagione. Vedremo...

Chi sono i tuoi "amici di sci"? Con che video gang giri?

Scio con i miei amici Tosh Peters, Max Peters, Jonny Marks, Andre Dumas, Adam Battersby, Tim
Gage, Stefan Thomas, Austin Ramaley e tanti altri. Potremmo andare avanti per giorni.. loro sono le persone con le quali mi diverto quasi ogni giorno. Non c'è una video gang precisa; con i miei amici filmiamo ed editiamo da anni.

Come descriveresti il tuo personale stile di riding?

Mi piace fare cose semplici e sentirmi leggero. Per lo più esco e faccio quello che voglio fare. Amo la pow quando c'è e sciare in park quando non c'è.

Torniamo alla realtà: su quale trick stai lavorando?

Su ogni trick. Il mio piano per la stagione è provare ed imparare ogni trick che immagino, in tutti i modi e con ogni grab. Quest'estate ero a Hood ed ho imparato double cork 12; spero di poterci lavorare ancora e migliorarlo. Voglio provare anche a prendere maggior confidenza con il switch double 10.

I assume you have heard this question before: How come your first name is “McRae” and
your last name “Williams”? Could also be the other way around?
Well, my grandmother is an artist, and she got the name from a famous painter that she knew of.
McRae is actually my middle name, but barely anyone knows my first name. So we'll keep it at that.

Typical first, actually now second question - how did you get into skiing?
It's hard to remember exactly; I was only three years old. Apparently, my mom would just throw me
on a leash and let me shred my little heart out. I have lived in Park City my whole life, so I started
skiing at Deer Valley. I do remember being stoked on all the little trails they had through the thick
trees, and they even had a little cabin with a stuffed bear inside. Such a good time!

Which was your first ski?
These old school wooden skis with leather strap bindings. Still have them somewhere around here.

When you started skiing, could you imagine skiing would be such a big thing for you?

No way! I always knew it was something I would stick with for the rest of my life because I loved it so
much, but I had no idea I would take it this far. Now skiing IS my life. It's a dream come true!

Where do you see yourself in the skiing scene and where would you like to be in 5 years from
now?
In five years I hope to be filming in the backcountry as much as possible, and traveling the
world to find the most epic zones. I will hopefully still do a few competitions here and there, but plan
to dedicate myself to filming as much as possible.

You just joined the Amplid Research Cartel. How did you get in touch with Amplid?
Actually, I got an invite to the West Coast Session, which is where I met Brandon Pastucka, who put
in a huge effort to make West Coast Sessions what it was. This summer Pastucka asked me if I
would be interest in joining Amplid, and invited me up to Mt. Hood to try some gear, and shred
Windells. I was super stoked on the skis, and everything that Amplid has to offer, so I signed a
contract a few weeks later.

Wallisch and Amplid split up, McRae joins. Does that put any particular pressure on you?
Most definitely. I know I won't be able to stand up to what Tom has done for our sport, but I plan to
dedicate myself to skiing as well as I possibly can. I plan to travel to all the comps I can manage, and take full advantage of any filming opportunities that are thrown at me. I have been training all
summer and hope it will come to show.

What are you up to for the coming season? Contests? Shooting?
I will be starting the season off by heading to Korea for a big air show. It will be a part of the opening
ceremonies of the Seoul Snow Jam, which is where the Snowboard World Cup Big Air will be taking
place. Then I plan to do the Dew Tour in Breckenridge, Colorado. Other than that I plan on doing
Aspen Open, Euro Open, Us Open, Winter Park Open, and any other competitions that pop up. I
also hope to do some filming towards the end of the season as well. We'll see.

Who are your riding buddies ? What video gang are you hanging out with?
I ski with my homies Tosh Peters, Max Peters, Jonny Marks, Andre Dumas, Adam Battersby, Tim
Gage, Stefan Thomas, Austin Ramaley, and many more. Could go on for days, but these are
definitely the guys I shred with just about everyday. I am not exactly hanging out with a certain video
gang. My homies and I have just been making rider filmed and edited videos here and there over the
years.

How would you describe your personal riding style?
I like to make things look easy, and feel buttery. Mostly I just go out there and do what I do. I shred
pow when it pows. Ski park when it doesn't pow. And I'm stoked to just get out there and shred no
matter where I end up.

Back to reality: What trick are you currently working on?
Every trick. My plan for this season is to try and learn every trick I can think of every way with every
grab. While in Hood this summer I learned double cork twelves. I am hoping to work on that and get it a bit more dialed. I also hope to try and get some blunts in a switch dub ten.

Not too mean. I occasionally yell at my sister for little things here and there, but thats typical. For the
most part I'm a nice guy.

Global warming.

Let’s say you are the president of our world. What would you change right now?
I would create and improve health programs for low income families.
