Eva Maria Patscheider è una ragazza austriaca di indubbio talento che abbiamo incontrato la prima volta agli shooting Smith in Val Senales a Luglio, simpatica, sincera e soprattutto agguerrita. Da poco rientrata da un infortunio si sta allenando duramente per migliorare il suo stile e raggiungere i risultati che finora gli sono mancati. Una ragazza semplice e tenace che abbiamo voluto intervistare per far sentire anche la voce femminile del freeski. Andiamo a conoscerla e godiamoci qualche scatto davvero impressionante!

Qual è il tuo primo ricordo legato al freeski?
Un’enorme livido sul mio sedere dopo aver provato a slidare un box per la prima volta! Ci ho provato un sacco per tutto il giorno e sono caduta nello stesso modo ogni volta.. Non penso che il mio culo sia mai stato così blu!

In che anno hai iniziato con il freeski e perchè hai scelto questo sport?
Era il Gennaio 2006, quando ho lavorato per un anno a Northstar (Tahoe)... Al tempo sciavo già da quando ero molto piccola, quindi è stato tutto abbastanza naturale per me. Ed è stato divertente sin dal primo secondo!

Qual è il tuo spot preferito?
Certamente Serfaus! Non è solo il mio home resort ed il posto dove incontro i miei vecchi amici, è anche un luogo dove si può trovare un park veramente carino (migliora ad ogni stagione che passa!), una tonnellata di posti immacolati dove fare backcountry e qualche buon apres-ski ;)

Chi è il tuo freeskier preferito?
Non posso nominare una sola persona. Dovrei dire Sarah Burke solo perchè ha fatto (e fa ancora) davvero tanto per noi freeskier donne! E’ in questo business da molto tempo ed ha un sacco di doti! Vorrei anche menzionare i miei fighissimi compagni dell’Atomic team come Bene Mayr, Chris Benchetler e Daron Rahlves, con i quali ho passato un’estate fantastica in Nuova Zelanda! Sciare e spingersi oltre con questi ragazzi non è stata solamente un’avventura ma anche un divertimento, come possono fare tutte le persone normali :)

Il miglior consiglio per un principiante...
Non c’è progressione senza dolore! Ma alla fine tutti gli sbagli iniziali servono!! .. Solamente continuare a provare più duramente che puoi, e sarai ripagato! Chiedere agli altri skiers, a chi ha già migliorato se stesso; chiedere un consiglio non è mai sbagliato! :)

Cosa hai fatto negli ultimi 6 mesi?
Dopo la scorsa stagione ho fatto un sacco di fisioterapia per la mia spalla (ho rotto la clavicola in Novembre) ed ho lavorato duro con l’allenamento per essere pronta per il mio viaggio in NZ con Atomic ai primi di Agosto. Ho passato quattro settimane là per fare qualche shooting, fare un pò di pratica e per competere ai NZ Open. Sulla via di casa mi sono fermata un pò in Indonesia per fare un pò di surf con il mio ragazzo e con altri amici. In questo momento sto tornando a casa e lavoverò quanto più possibile per essere ben preparata per la prossima stagione... Non ce la faccio più ad aspettare!!!

Quale potrebbe essere il tuo highlight della passata stagione?
Ho rotto la clavicola a Novembre e la guarigione mi ha preso quasi 3 mesi, un chiaro highlight è stato perciò a Lebanon, quando sono riuscita a sciare nuovamente. E’ stata un’esperienza totalmente nuova ed ho imparato un nuovo modo di sciare. Il podio agli European Open è stato certamente un altro highlight! Ero veramente sorpresa da me stessa e perciò molto felice.

Quanto è importante l’immagine per te?
L’immagine non è una piccola parte del nostro sport... Ma non ci sono problemi, se questa è l’immagine che tu rappresenti di un’azienda o se questa è la tua immagine di rider. Personalmente non mi piace pensare troppo a quello che le altre persone vedono in me o cosa pensano di quello che sto facendo. Io cerco di essere me stessa, piuttosto che fissarti dentro ad un’immagine.. qualcuno vorrebbe sempre inquadrati...

Se non fossi stata una freeskier, cosa avresti voluto essere?
Senza il mio sano appetito forse una super magra top model... ahahahah! No, probabilmente avrei fatto qualcosa come la giocatrice di beach volley o forse la snowboarder.

Come ti vedi fra 10 anni?
Ricca abbastanza per non fare nient'altro che surfare le mie onde private con i miei bambini, sulla mia isola tropicale privata, per tutto il giorno... Finchè non torna l’inverno in Austria ovviamente! :)

Che tipo di musica ascolti solitamente?
Tutti i tipi di musica... dipende sempre dal mio stato d’animo!

Qual è il peggior lavoro che tu abbia mai fatto?
Ho fatto qualche lavoretto, fin da quando avevo 14 anni. Il peggiore è stato probabilmente quando sono stata seduta in un enorme magazzino, prezzando migliaia di palline da golf – senza vedere la luce del giorno e con un sacco di ragni tutt’attorno!!!

Impaziente, attenta e positiva (la maggior parte del tempo)

Cosa fa Eva per rilassarsi dopo una giornata di skiing?
Adoro saltare dentro la mia vasca da bagno... probabilmente il posto più confortevole! Un bicchiere di vino può certamente aiutare :)

Che programmi hai per il futuro?
Finire i miei studi è sicuramente una priorità!

Ti piace di più fare contest, foto/video shooting o farti gli affari tuoi? Perchè?
Ad essere sincera preferisco solo sciare e divertirmi con i miei amici... nessuna pressione, nessuna aspettativa! Forse fare shooting o filmare, perchè così puoi vedere i risultati di quello che hai fatto per tutto il giorno! Non sono una grande fan dei contest, ma sono una parte del gioco e sto provando a fare del mio meglio...

Which is your first memory about freeskiing?
Having a huge bruise on my butt after trying to slide a box for the first time! I practised all day and of course fell on the exact same sport every single time... Don’t think that my butt was ever this blue :)

Which year did you start freeskiing and why this sport?
It was January 2006, when I spend a year working at Northstar-at-Tahoe... I already skied since I was really small, so it felt quite natural to me. It was fun since the first second!

Which is your favourite spot?
Most defenitly Serfaus! It’s not only my homespot and the place where I meet many of my long time friends, it’s also a place where you find a really nice park (which is getting better every season), a ton of untouched BC spots and of course some good apres-ski ;)

Who is your favourite freeskier?
I don’t think that I can only name one person here. I would have to say Sarah Burke, just because she did (and still does) so much for us female skiers! She’s been in this business for so long and still kills it like none else! I also would like to mention my really cool Atomic team mates Bene Mayr, Chris Benchetler and Daron Rahlves, who I had the pleasure of spending some time in New Zealand with this summer! Skiing and also hanging out with those guys was not only an adventure, but also almost more fun than a normal person can handle :)

Best advice for a beginner...
No progression without pain! But in the end all the initial falling was totally worth it!! Just keep trying as hard as you can, and it will pay off! Asking other skiers, who are already better than yourself, for advice is never a mistake either :)

What did you do in the last six months?
After the last season was over I did a lot of physio for my shoulder (broke my collabone in november) and worked out hard in the fitness studio to get ready for my trip to NZ with Atomic in the beginning of august. I spend about four weeks there to do some product shooting and also to pracice and compete at the NZ Open. On the way home I took a short stop in Indonesia for some surfing with my lovely BF and a few other good friends. Right now I’m pretty much back home and working out as much as possible, to be as well prepared for the upcoming winter as possible... I can’t wait!!!

What has been the highlight of this past year?
As I broke my collabone last november and not having it heal for almost three month, a clear hightlight was my trip to Lebanon right when I was allowed to ski again. It was a total new experience and a complete new way of skiing for me. The podium at the European Open was also a highlight for sure! I was pretty suprised myself and therefore really happy about it.

How much important is the image for you?
Image is not a small part of our sport... It doesn’t matter, if it’s the image of the company you represent or your own image as a rider. I personally don’t like to think too much about the way other people see me or what they think about what I’m doing. I try to be myself, rather than fitting into an image, someone wants you to fit in...

If you weren't a freeskier what would you be?
Without my healthy appetite maybe one of those super skinny Supermodels... hahahahaha! No, I’d probably be something like a Beachvolley player or maybe a snowboarder.

How do you see yourself in 10 years?
Rich enough to do nothing else than surf my privat wave with my kids on my privat tropical island all day long... Until austrian winter is back at least :)

All kinds of music... it always depends on my mood!

Worst job you've ever had?
I’ve had a few jobs since I was 14. The worst one was probably sitting in a huge warehouse, putting price stickers on thousands of golfballs - without any daylight and tons of spiders all over the place!!!!

What does Eva do to relax after a long day of skiing?
I love to jump into my bathtub... it’s probably the comfiest plast ever! A glas of wine is pretty helpful as well :)

Which plans do you have for your future?
Finishing my studies is definitly a priority!

Is it better going to contest, photoshooting/video or doing your own business? Why?
To be honest I prefere just skiing and having a good time with my friends... no pressure, no expectaions! I also do like shooting and filming, because you can see the results of what you did all day right away! I’m not really a huge fan of contests, but it’s part of the game and I turned out to be not that bad at it... so i would say I kinda like it as well!
